I have been fascinated with WWI and it’s dreadful continuing aftermath ever since my grandfather gave me the diary he kept through the year of 1918. I see WWI and WW2 as the same conflict separated by a brief intermission. I don’t think it has ended yet. The wars of colonial independence, the wars in the Middle East – nearly every current conflict on the planet – almost all can be traced back to the Treaty of Versailles.

These themes emerge in different ways in many of my paintings, sometimes more obviously than others, but they are often present. In this relatively small series, I focussed on them directly.
